I Wish We Could Fix Canada

When people from other countries think of Canada, they think of this wonderful place, a getaway from home where there a kind people to welcome you in. When people think of Canadians, they see people who drink Maple Syrup, apologise too much, and love the game of hockey.

We have all these special attributes that other countries don’t have. So in essence, we’re supposed to be proud to be Canadian.

But there isn’t a lot to be proud when you’re a world leader in auto theft, a country that doesn’t look after aboriginal and minority communities, and a place that costs more than any other country in the world to live in.

Someone told me the other day that a 70% of Canadians think Canada is broken. I can’t assume that those numbers are true, but I also can’t see it being all that wrong. If 65% of your nation wants the Prime Minister to step down, something probably isn’t right with where a country is headed.

And that’s sad.

Because I wish we could be proud to be Canadian. Proud to be a country that boasts diversity, and proud to be a place where people from all walks of life are welcomed. But that isn’t really the case.

Because today, more immigration has lead to more racism, more pride has lead to more inequality, and people are talking about crime and murder, when they should…
